Module Duration: 12 weeks;
- Week 1 - Assessment (basic A to E of an intubated patient)
- Week 2 - Ventilation: Basic ventilator settings, ventilator bundles, weaning, ABGs and vent manipulation.
- Week 3 - Basic monitoring (art line, CVC, bp, spo2, hr and, basic inotropes/vasopressors, normal ECG interpretation
- Week 4- “Housekeeping”: Airway care, mouth care, nutrition/NG position, infection control, lines, DVT prophylaxis, stress ulcer prophylaxis, glucose control, pressure ulcers.
- Week 5 & Week 6- Renal and AKI, electrolytes, fluid management
- Week 7- Sepsis/infection/antibiotics. Definitions, care bundles, pharmacology.
- Week 8- Sedation, pain/analgesia.
- Week 9- Rehab/physio,
- Week 10- Transfer, SBAR, communication (family and colleagues/patients). Organization and management.
- Week 11- QI methodology and project
Aim: To equip students with the practical, analytical and professional skills necessary to safely and competently care for critically unwell patients. The module will focus on routine care of the critically unwell patient and incorporate all relevant aspects of quality care for patients will critical illness.
The module will cover 4 domains:
- Clinical skills to safely care for critically ill patients
- Critical analysis of evidence underpinning theory and practice
- Clinical governance overarching safe, effective and high-quality care
- Human factors for effective team working communication and professional conduct.
Objective: To equip candidates with the competency in the 4 domains to provide routine care of the critically unwell patients in ICU.
Teaching methods: The module will be delivered using a series of online tutorials, reading material and interactive sessions. Candidates underpinning A&P knowledge will be assessed using an MCQ prior to commencing the module.
Assessment: Candidates will be assessed following the module via an online MCQ, 2 case-based discussions and a reflective diary.
In addition, candidates will be required to attend a mandatory 2-day workshop during which clinical specialists will deliver a series of practical skills workshops and simulation scenarios offering students an opportunity to assimilate prior and new theoretical knowledge to practice.
The module will focus on 3 case scenarios detailing real patients cared for within Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Learning outcomes: By the end of the module candidates will be able to demonstrate competency in;
- Care of the ventilated patient
- Systematic assessment of the critically unwell patient
- Recognition of deterioration and escalation in care
- Titration of routine therapies
